Area 3 resides on Kodiak Island, Alaska’s most productive fleet of fishing vessels. It has the largest fleet of fishing vessels and is considered one of the largest fishing ports in the country. Kodiak Island doesn’t offer the excellent summer work opportunities as some of Alaska’s other cities. While some summer work is available, the area focuses on fish other than salmon such as bottomfish and crab and employ year-round processors as opposed to those who come to Alaska for seasonal employment.
If Kodiak sounds familiar it’s because the island is home to the famous Kodiak brown bear. The part of the island that isn’t used for fishing and processing is used as a wildlife refuge for animals in the area, specifically the bears. These bears feed off of salmon that migrate up the region’s rivers.
